htaccess and WordPress

We recommend the following to be included on your .htaccess file.

order allow,deny
deny from all

# BEGIN WordPress

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

# END WordPress

This provides basic URL rewriting for WordPress features, like pretty URLs.
